Director of Individual Giving


The Director of Individual Giving will play a leadership role as part of a committed and enthusiastic Development team at an exciting and important moment in Boston Ballet’s history. With room to innovate while working closely with the Director of Development (DOD), the Director will shape, oversee and build Individual Giving Program capacity, with responsibility for day-to-day operations. The Director will manage his/her own portfolio of key prospective donor relationships and maintain an external, front-line focus, while balancing internal requirements. The Director will play an active role in strategic thinking and planning on campaign development to maximize philanthropic opportunities. This individual will be seen as a leader within Advancement and the overall organization while managing a team of three to five staff members.


  • Oversee Major Gifts and Annual Giving programs, as well as emerging planned giving capacity
  • Manage a team of colleagues (3-5)
  • Be responsible for front-line, high-level portfolio of relationship assignments
  • Utilize opportunities to shape programs with room to innovate
  • Work with DOD to define performance metrics to guide activity and measure progress and success
  • Maximize pipeline building and connections to promote deeper philanthropic engagement
  • Participate in strategic conversations about campaign planning
  • Develop and implement short and long-term engagement and solicitation strategies; build long-term capacity
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor’s degree and ten years of experience in development

  • Experience in building and executing successful campaigns

  • Experience in, or commitment to, the Arts

  • Experience and comfort level with creative donor/constituent engagement strategies

  • Successful front-line major gifts experience in complex institutions

  • Management experience

  • Skills as a collaborative, flexible team player and self-starter, demonstrating creativity, sense of humor, innovative thinking
