Director of Creative


New England Conservatory's Department of Marketing and Communications is a central resource for the NEC community, fostering lasting, impactful relationships among a diversity of constituents spanning professions, talents, and continents.

The Marketing and Communications unit is comprised of an exceptionally talented team of professionals spanning all aspects of the marketing and communications arena, including design, content, digital, and strategy.

The Office is currently seeking a Director of Creative, a crucial position that provides strategic oversight of design and media production for the institution. The Director leads the Creative team, which includes photography, design, and copy editing efforts. The position is responsible for translating the incredible talent of the NEC community - and its impact in the world - through powerful, bold design.

The Director reports to the Vice President for Communications and serves in a senior leadership capacity in the Office.
  • Lead the development, oversight, implementation of the institution's brand and visual identity system through powerful design across the entirety of the institution's media, collateral, and platforms - print and digital.
  • Lead the Creative team.
  • Serve as the institution's chief designer, and provide strategic guidance, coaching, and, if needed, corrective action.
  • Lead efforts in branded experiences and the infusion of design in physical environments.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Marketing & Communications Strategy to ensure smooth implementation of project management workflows and client delivery/review processes.
  • Serve in a senior leadership capacity for the Office.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in a senior designer capacity, with particular focus on developing, modifying, and deploying visual identity systems for complex, powerful brands.
  • Robust portfolio of design examples, spanning print, digital, and physical media.
  • Experience collaborating with a diverse team of professionals in an environment of partnership.
  • Successful track-record of continual assessment, analysis, and repositioning of work to meet evolving organizational needs.
  • Desire to mentor, cultivate, and manage a team of professionals of varying experience and expertise.
  • A forward-looking orientation, with a firm grasp of trends prior to their entering the mainstream.
  • Ready understanding of client needs, including the ability to translate occasionally unspecific feedback into concrete objectives, improvements, or modifications.
