Encyclopedia Intern

Description:

JWA is looking for an intern to work closely with the Editor on revisions and updates to JWA’s Encyclopedia of Jewish Women. The Encyclopedia, which currently includes approximately 2000 biographical and topical entries about Jewish women across time and place, is a rich resource for students, teachers, clergy, and anyone who wants to know more about the experiences of Jewish women past and present. The Encyclopedia Intern will assist with a wide variety of research, editorial, and organizational tasks involved in updating a major online publication.

The ideal candidate will be motivated and enthusiastic and have a strong interest in Jewish Studies, feminism, and/or public history. For academic-year internships, a commitment of at least 5 hours per week for twelve weeks is required. For summer internships, a commitment of at least 10 hours per week for eight weeks is required. This is an unpaid position, but academic credit may be arranged.

Key Responsibilities
  • Updating the format and content of existing Encyclopedia entries.
  • Locating and securing permissions for media (images, audio, video, documentary sources) to be used in Encyclopedia entries.
  • Doing research and other tasks to support an Editorial Board consisting of renowned scholars of Jewish women’s and gender studies.
  • Maintaining organized records of correspondence, permissions, and submission status.
Qualifications:
  • Strong writing skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to meet established deadlines
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Keen interest in the history of Jewish women and feminism
  • Background in history, gender studies, or Jewish Studies preferred. Interest in public history a plus.
