Communications Manager

Communications Manager at a vibrant hub of dance, art and action…

The Dance Complex, a hub in the Boston/Cambridge dance scene seeks a Communications Manager to translate the amazing and multi-faceted work of this nationally recognized non-profit center. The Dance Complex celebrates the study, creation and performance of dozens of dance genres and forms in 100 classes a week, 100’s of public events a year and 1000’s of human connections made weekly among all those who engage in dance with us. Our Communications Manager will bring voice to all we dance day in and day out.

The Communications Manager is a 30 – 35 hour a week position that reports to the Executive Artistic Director and works collaboratively with a passionate and hard-working staff. Potentially, a Communications Associate and interns will report to this position.

A recent communications plan conducted for the organization by one of Boston’s leading PR & communications firms has helped to create a template of The Dance Complex’s outlets of social media, press releases, video, and printed materials – as well as the multiple kinds of audiences we reach. Good progress on all these fronts has been made, ready for the right individual to keep our communications growing and dynamic: We have built the basics of a well-defined communications strategy, branding guidelines, templates and press kits, and The Dance Complex’s social media following has grown exponentially. We also have well-maintained and organized archives.

As the position, and the organization, evolves and grows, the qualities we seek in a Communications Manager include a strategic thinker, collaborator, systems analyst, and an individual with nimble and effective organizational awareness. We seek someone who can maintain the growth we’ve made, and potentially expand the role and the department of communications, aligning with the organization’s strategic frame.

Those who thrive while working at The Dance Complex are self-starters, are organized, communicate with clarity, accomplish their work with both a sense of dreaming and an eye on the calendar. Employees of The Dance Complex understand that there are roles and responsibilities individually but also there is collaboration as a part of a team to successfully see a goal to fruition in a timely way. It is vital to the organization that the Communications Manager possess an ability to see multiple perspectives, both lead and follow others, and possess a curiosity and a sense of wonder for what we do, for the field of dance, and for a world beyond dance. Staff endeavor, as we ask all in the organization, to be guided by an “all in movement” philosophy- working to create no barriers to dance, actively engaging those “other-ed”; as well as to reflect and act on a “next, deep step”, a tool to self-articulate a next area of growth and action towards said growth.
