Engagement Manager, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum - Lincoln (year-round, full-time)
Summary of Position:
The deCordova Engagement Manager is a full-time exempt (salaried) position based at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, MA. This position is responsible for the educational experiences and public programs at deCordova including public programs, Museum Guide training, Museum & Sculpture Park tours, interpretive & self-guided experiences, and events. Reporting to the Business Director and collaborating extensively with site based and statewide teammates, the Engagement Manager will deliver a vision and cohesive set of programs that increase visitation, grow program and gate revenue, increase membership sales and revenue, and improve visitor satisfaction through the development of new experiences and improved programs.
Under the leadership of the Business Director, the Engagement Manager will create and maintain the overall educational and programmatic vision for the site in collaboration with the Curatorial department with a focus on public programs and educational experiences, including the development and implementation of initiatives related to The Trustees new strategic plan, Momentum. The Engagement Manager reports to the Business Director, deCordova, and directly supervises the Family and Youth Programs Manager, Education Associate, Head of Learning Environments and Ceramics Sculpture Studio Manager.
Specifically, the Engagement Manager’s responsibilities can be categorized as follows:
1. ?Create and Implement Tours, Programs and Events
Develop and implement creative, interdisciplinary adult studio courses and other public programs related to temporary contemporary art exhibitions and deCordova’s Sculpture Park
Assess and adapt Museum and Sculpture Park tour programs to provide memorable and distinctly unique tour experiences
Train Museum Guides on temporary contemporary art exhibitions, rotating sculptures in deCordova’s Sculpture Park, and progressive, inquiry-based touring techniques
Support exhibition-inspired tours and programs in collaboration with curators
Create new, meaningful programs and events at deCordova that are in line with the Trustees’ strategic plan, spirit of place, and deCordova’s focus on the intersection between art and nature.
Increase program and event revenue and manage engagement budgets
Develop and implement program satisfaction surveys
Responsible for tracking metrics for all deCordova programs
Provide activities to select signature and development events on property and track as part of overall public engagement Annual Plan for the Museum
Work with the Artistic Director and Statewide Director of Public Programs to carry out statewide programs and themes on deCordova’s campus.
Supervise the Youth and Family Programs Manager and provide strategic vision for summer camp and other growth opportunities.
2. Enhance the deCordova Visitor Experience
Provide outstanding customer service to visitors
Manage all aspects of the visitor experience in relation to educational and public programs, events and activities
With the Engagement staff and in collaboration with the Business Director and Head of Visitor Services, implement all specialized tours, activities, self-guided experiences, and interpretive materials for visitors
3.?Grow Visitation and Program Participation
In collaboration with the Head of Visitor Services and membership department, develop a Membership Sales strategy in relation to the educational and public programs
Build upon current relationships and develop new partnerships to expand outreach and awareness of deCordova in the community
Identify and target new audiences by creating and implementing a comprehensive local marketing plan for engagement with the statewide marketing department and Business Director
Work closely with the Marketing team to increase web, print and social media promotions of deCordova’s programs as a destination for multiple audiences in MA and beyond
In collaboration with the Educational Associate and marketing department promote group tours to increase visitation
Support Development Team with site specific fundraising efforts and contents for grant applications
Represent the Trustees in the regional museum community and with regional tourism entities
Work with Business Director to complete and execute engagement components of the Property Business Plan
Prepare and manage Engagement departmental budget
Submit statewide and regional reports and deliverables on time and as requested
Act as liaison to deCordova Engagement Committee
The ideal candidate will have energy, enthusiasm, and dedication to provide every visitor a remarkable experience at deCordova and The Trustees.
5+ years of progressively responsible experience in cultural resource interpretation, visitor engagement, and/or education, with two years minimum as a manager or supervisor of staff
BA/BS degree required, Masters degree in Museum Studies, Museum Education, Art, Art Education, and/or Art History strongly preferred. Experience in interpretive art-focused programming design with an entrepreneurial spirit. Familiarity with progressive, informal learning techniques and education
Background in mentoring, evaluating, and providing feedback to staff
Demonstrated experience in program leadership, collaboration with internal and external partners, strategic planning, oral communication, presentations, persuasive writing, and training staff
Strong analytic and organizational skills and the ability to engage diverse constituents
A valid driver’s license, as well as a satisfactory driving record
A satisfactory criminal background check (CORI)
Working evenings weekends and holidays required
Microsoft proficiency as well as some Adobe Suite design experience
The ability to lift 40 lbs independently and spend periods of time standing during events
