Assistant Director, Marketing & Communications

Duties & Responsibilities
Under the leadership of Terrie and Bradley Bloom Artistic Director Diane Paulus and Executive Producer Diane Borger, the American Repertory Theater aims to expand the boundaries of theater and engage thousands of theatergoers at more than 300 performances and events each season. The Marketing and Communications department is responsible for maintaining and building awareness of the institutional brand as well as crafting sales strategies that result in more than $5 million in annual earned revenue.

Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Assistant Director, Marketing and Communications is an integral member of the marketing team responsible for managing and implementing marketing strategies and tactics. The Assistant Director is a key stakeholder in creating and fostering an audience-focused culture across the institution. This position supervises the Social Media and Sales Apprentice, Community Outreach Apprentice, and interns and collaborates closely with all members of the Marketing and Communication Department as well as members of the Development and Patron Services Departments.

The successful candidate will undertake a broad range of responsibilities including:

  • Oversee internal communications between departments.
  • Liaise between the Patron Services and Development Departments and the Marketing and Communications Department to coordinate external relations strategies.

  • Oversee the development and execution of institutional communications such as print collateral, direct mail, social media, and email.
  • Create and execute innovative marketing and communication strategies to engage new audiences and increase loyalty and audience retention.
  • Build a strong connection to and relationship with A.R.T.’s brand and productions by monitoring and responding to patron feedback though emails and social media.
  • Organize and program production-specific and general A.R.T. advertising campaigns.
  • Oversee the patron database as it relates to audience segmentation for direct mail and email strategies, as well as proposing and maintaining data standards across departments.
  • Provide regular analysis of current strategies and campaigns for direct mail, advertising, social media, digital activity, and email campaigns.
  • Research and recommend new tools, technologies, and social media outlets.

  • Manage the marketing budget, processing all invoices and accounts payable, tracking department expenses, and reconciling against the organizational budget
  • Negotiate with and identify vendors to bid on and fulfill projects for the institution, including all printed communications and advertising buys.

This position participates fully in all marketing events, such as opening nights, press nights, receptions, community and promotional events, and other special events and may represent the institution at community and industry events.
Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:
Bachelor’s degree and/or a minimum of five years equivalent professional experience.
