Shelter Music Boston Children and Family Shelter Program Coordinator

Description:

Shelter Music Boston (SMB) presents classical chamber music concerts, of the highest artistic standards, in homeless shelters and other sheltering environments. Our goal is to promote community, creative interaction, respect, and therapeutic benefit. We believe all people deserve access to the dignity, creativity, and passion of classical music whether or not they have a home. In 2018, through a collaboration with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, SMB created our Children and Family Shelter Program to bring the power of live classical music to children and families impacted by homelessness. The part-time program coordinator position will work with SMB staff to manage the artistic and administrative aspects of the program.

ARTISTIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the artistic and educational elements of the program

  • Select individual program repertoire with input from collaborating musicians, incorporating music by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of color), LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning), and women composers on every program

  • Design educational activities that correspond with the repertoire and theme

  • Schedule musicians to perform or record the chosen program

  • Schedule and manage rehearsals of the program

  • Manage each performance’s flow and activities for live concerts

  • Implement and coordinate any artistic collaborations, i.e. our Opera Creation Project with Boston Lyric Opera

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan for and acquire necessary materials for program implementation, with SMB staff

  • Work with SMB staff to craft language for funding proposals

  • Develop and draft a training manual for SMB musicians performing children’s programming in shelters and similar programs

  • Update the SMB Master Calendar with program dates and repertoire links

  • Prepare musician contracts for each concert program or recording

  • Work directly with partner sites to schedule live or live virtual concerts, receive feedback from site staff and program participants, and maintain proper permissions for artwork and photography

  • Upload feedback, comments, and photos to SMB files in a timely manner

  • Review raw material submitted for virtual concert videos and then send materials with detailed instructions to SMB Music Producer.

  • Design and implement an effective program evaluation process for live or virtual concerts

Qualifications:

  • A passion for social justice and a commitment to anti-racism; an outgoing, personable, and articulate ambassador

  • Professional classical musician with an appreciation and recognition of the transformational power of live classical music

  • Teaching experience

  • Ability to translate musical concepts and history into children’s activities

  • Ability to work independently and remotely

  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills

  • Strong organizational skills; proficiency with Google Drive

COMPENSATION

Shelter Music Boston is offering a $3,600 annual stipend, with 4 weeks unpaid vacation, to coordinate SMB’s Children and Family Shelter Program. The work load averages 3 hours a week with a slight increase during busy periods. This position and associated compensation are above and beyond any work done as a musician during the concerts themselves.

This is a one-year part-time contract position. This 1099 position is paid monthly. There are no benefits associated with this position.

How To Apply:

  • Please submit a Letter of Application outlining professional accomplishments and what makes you a good fit for Shelter Music Boston.

  • A current resume or CV.

  • Names and contact information for two (2) references.

  • Links to websites or online resources with representative samples of successfully delivered creative work, including your own musical performances. These samples should showcase work that includes BIPOC, LGTBTQ, and women composers.
